Anthropic settles AI book piracy lawsuit
Anthropic, an AI startup, has reached a settlement in a class-action lawsuit filed by US authors who accused the company of copyright infringement. The lawsuit claimed that Anthropic had trained its Claude AI models on an open-source dataset filled with pirated materials. While Anthropic had previously scored a victory in court, with a judge ruling that training AI models on legally purchased books counts as fair use, the authors' class-action lawsuit was set to go to trial in December, where Anthropic could have faced penalties of up to $1 trillion. The terms of the settlement are not yet clear, but the authors' attorney states that the settlement will "benefit all class members" and that further details will be announced in the coming weeks. Anthropic has declined to comment on the matter.
