EU fines Google nearly €3bn for ‘abusing’ dominant position in ad tech

The European Union has fined Google €2.95 billion ($3.5 billion) for abusing its dominant position in the digital advertising market. The European Commission, the EU's antitrust regulator, found that Google had engaged in "self-preferencing practices" by favoring its own advertising services over those of competitors. The decision marks the fourth antitrust penalty imposed on Google by the EU. While the Commission ordered Google to end its anti-competitive practices, it did not go as far as to force the company to sell off parts of its business, a threat that had been previously raised. The fine and the ruling are part of the EU's ongoing efforts to rein in the market power of large tech companies and ensure a level playing field for competition in the digital advertising sector.
