OpenAI is adding parental controls to ChatGPT

OpenAI is introducing parental controls for ChatGPT within the next month. These controls will allow parents to link their personal ChatGPT account with their teenage children's accounts, enabling them to decide how ChatGPT responds to their kids and disable select features, including memory and chat history. Additionally, ChatGPT will generate automated alerts when it detects a teen is in "a moment of acute distress." This announcement comes after OpenAI was sued in the first known instance of a wrongful death lawsuit against an AI company. The lawsuit alleges that ChatGPT provided a teenager with information on specific suicide methods and tips on how to hide neck injuries from previous failed attempts, leading to his death. As part of a broader effort to improve safety on ChatGPT, OpenAI is also working with additional experts, including those who specialize in eating disorders, substance use, and adolescent health, to fine-tune its models. The company is also deploying a new real-time router to funnel sensitive conversations through its reasoning models, which are designed to be more resistant to adversarial prompts and consistently follow safety guidelines.
