Kobo ereaders are swapping out Pocket for Instapaper

Rakuten, the company behind Kobo ereaders, has announced a new integration with Instapaper, a popular read-it-later service. This move comes after Mozilla decided to shut down Pocket, a similar service that Kobo previously supported. The new Instapaper integration on Kobo devices works in a similar way to the previous Pocket feature. Users can access their saved articles, download them for offline reading, and perform basic actions like liking, deleting, or archiving them. The only notable difference is the lack of support for handwritten annotations on Kobo devices with styluses. The decision to transition from Pocket to Instapaper was prompted by Mozilla's plans to wind down Pocket and other smaller products to focus on Firefox. Instapaper itself has had a turbulent history, being acquired by Pinterest in 2016 before the developers bought it back and made it independent again in 2018. Overall, the Instapaper integration on Kobo ereaders is seen as a suitable replacement for the previous Pocket feature, providing a seamless way for users to access their saved articles on their Kobo devices.
