Google tests QR code verification for text messages
Google is testing a new feature in its Messages app that uses QR codes to verify the identity of contacts. The feature, currently in beta, allows users to scan a QR code to confirm that the person they are communicating with is who they claim to be. This is an alternative to the previous method of comparing an 80-digit code. The QR code verification is part of Google's efforts to create a unified system for public key verification across different apps, which can also be verified through number comparison. The company is also planning to switch its SMS-based two-factor authentication on Gmail to QR codes.
